Satvinder Gill’s - El Perro De Presa Canario
1) What type of canine do you have?
El Perro de Presa Canario, bred purely from the Irema Curto family bloodline by John Young of J7 Security in the UK.
2) How did you learn about the breed?
First heard about the breed back in 1991 when researching alternative working Mastiffs. Then my family went on a trip to Canada and came back telling me about Presa’s & Cane Corso’s, started researching the Presa around 2006.
3) What traits about the breed attracted you to become an owner?
It’s a true working mastiff. I cannot stress any more this is entirely dependent on lineage, breeding, and up bringing. A distinct aloofness to strangers, guarding ability without being too noisy, loyal protector of their pack.
4) Who did you get your pup from?
John Young of J7 Security, England
5) Statistics – Age, weight, measurements, etc?
Cruz in the pics ranges from a year old to present 17mnths old 25inches to shoulder and weight at a year old was 48.5kg. When working him I will trim him to around 44kg mark. I think once he’s fully matured I can see him at a lean 47kg.
6) What do you feed your canine?
A raw diet comprising mainly chicken carcass/backs, tripe, fish, eggs, and pre-prepared raw from a company called Landywoods in the UK.
7) Have you enlisted specialized training for your canine?
Yes, from a pup OB, Agility and security based training and pp.
8) Can you describe your canines’ temperament? -
Jekyll and Hyde lol!! He has his moods!! I would say dominant, stubborn and aggressive towards dominant dogs but on the other hand kind and loving and will cry for attention of his owner. He is very protective of his pack. Needing an experienced firm/fair handler that understands the breed.
9) What titles/accolades have you & your canine achieved?
First dual-certified (NASDU and BIPDT) General Purpose Security Patrol dog in the UK of his breed at 15 months. NASDU = National Association of Security Dog Users. BIPDT= British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers.
10) What would you like to see for the breed?
Focus upon preservation of health, temperament and function of the original breed. With breeders and owners who act as custodians rather than people seeking personal glory, recognition, or profit. These people are not in touch with the breed, its origins and its preservation. They seek to change it to yet another show dog, when the very reason so many people look toward the Presa and other breeds is because of their original temperament and ability to function.
11) What would you tell a new prospective owner about the breed and selecting a pup?
Gain a LOT of exposure to working dogs of all types before you embark upon this journey. You need experience with all sorts; as they are a unique proposition and not at all to be taken with anything but the utmost seriousness. Learn the lines and breeders you like, then familiarize yourself with them in person preferably for a year or so before you take the plunge. If you can, help in rescuing older dogs (under guidance of knowledgeable breeders) so that when you get around to having your own pup, you are giving it and you the best chance. They are not a foo-foo dog, not for lying on your couch, or your bed!
12) Where is your canine from & what is the correct title/name to have him listed on the site?
El Perro De Presa Canario. Cruz is bred from pure Irema Curto bloodline that originates from Irema Curto Kennels Tenerife.
13) Finally, please include any information that you would like published not covered in the questionnaire questions.
Cruz has been fully health checked ie. Hips and elbows xray, blood test and thyroid function, urine and DNA parental checked, all of which were excellent.
