Terra Presotto’s - Brutus
Brutus was born August 8 2007, he is a White English Bulldog bred for farm utility work from the areas of Eastman, GA and Milton, FL. Like many white English he doesn’t have much of a documented pedigree, though breeders have increased their efforts to preserve the breed and are starting to keep better records. He has attained his HIC, TT, CGN titles.
I have always been interested in the “all-around farm dog” but never in my dreams thought it could come in the form of a functional healthy bodied bulldog which I have also have always had an affinity towards. When the opportunity presented itself (knowing in the future I would be raising some of my own livestock) I started my journey with the White English.
Now let me tell you a bit about Brutus or as many refer to him - “The littlest horse in the barn.” He was born an old soul, very mature and focused for a pup. He exhibits an aptitude to train and loves to learn. He also has great natural instincts and evaluated with good stock sense. When he matured a bit and had a good understanding of obedience commands, he was introduced to livestock such as poultry, waterfowl, sheep, cows and horses, and took to them with ease.
He is a dual-purpose herding dog and stock guardian with a sense of propriety over the animals and a strong attachment to his family and property. Brutus is calm, relaxed and confident in nature but forceful when necessary and also gentle enough to be trusted with smaller animals like chicks and rabbits, he will adjust the force needed to accomplish the task at hand.
He’s doing a good job of keeping the property rid of unwanted predators along with my female Mina, whether it be coyotes, coons, and/or rodents raiding the feed bins. My dogs do not tend to stray or wander away from home once they learn the boundary lines or perimeters of the property, which is a quality I like. To me a farm dog is useless if it needs to be chained to keep it from running away and causing problems on other peoples land or my own.
Brutus is a great dog on the trail whether it be with horses, on foot or mountain bike. You feel safe in heavily forested areas with a dog like Brutus.
I would love to pursue a lot more with him in the future like tracking but I have to say he really is in his element at home with his animals. I look forward to learning more about my dogs as they mature.
I raise my dogs as naturally as possible; they are on a raw diet with minimal vaccinations. With Bulldogs in general being such a versatile breed, I hope you enjoyed reading about my experiences with using Brutus as a farm utility dog.
I want to thank Dave for giving me the opportunity to tell you all about him.
I would like to add as someone living in a country with BSL and living with the possibility of having my dog taken away from me, I urge all owners with bulldog type dogs to be extra responsible with their dogs and go the extra mile to become breed ambassadors. People tend to only remember the negative, but hopefully a well mannered obedient dog speaks loudly.
